Dry needling

Dry needling uses very fine, sterile needles to release tight, painful muscles in the feet and lower legs. It's usually combined with exercises and other treatment.

Private patients welcome. DVA card holders, ask us.

How dry needling works

A fine, single-use needle is placed into a tight band or trigger point in a muscle. This can cause a brief twitch, after which the muscle often relaxes. Dry needling is different from acupuncture: it's based on Western anatomy and targets specific muscles linked to your pain.

What it may help with

  • Heel and arch pain with tight foot muscles
  • Tight, sore calf muscles
  • Achilles and shin pain
  • Muscle tightness after injury or overuse

Is it safe?

Dry needling is low risk when performed by a trained practitioner using sterile, single-use needles. You may feel a dull ache during treatment and some soreness for a day or two afterwards. Tell us if you take blood thinners, have a bleeding disorder, are pregnant or feel nervous about needles, so we can decide together whether it's right for you.

What a session involves

  1. We assess your pain and find the tight, tender areas in the muscle.
  2. We explain what we plan to do and ask for your consent.
  3. A few fine needles are placed in the muscle, usually for a few minutes.
  4. We follow up with stretches or exercises to help the muscle stay relaxed.

After treatment

  • Some muscle soreness for a day or two is normal
  • Keep moving gently, as staying active helps the soreness settle
  • Keep up the stretches and exercises we give you
  • Tell us at your next visit how you responded, so we can adjust your treatment

Funding

Dry needling is available to private patients. If you hold a DVA card, ask us whether it can be included in your treatment.

Common questions

Ask us anything else on 0493 367 109.

Does dry needling hurt?

The needles are very thin, so most people feel little when they go in. You may feel a twitch or a deep ache in the muscle, which passes quickly.

How is it different from acupuncture?

Both use fine needles, but dry needling is based on Western anatomy and targets specific tight muscles. Acupuncture is based on traditional Chinese medicine.

Will I have dry needling at every visit?

Only if it's helping. It's one tool among several, and we always explain what we plan to do and ask for your consent first.

How soon will I notice a difference?

Some people feel looser straight away, while others notice a change over a few sessions. We review how you're going at each visit.
