Injuries we commonly treat

  • Ankle sprains and ongoing ankle weakness
  • Heel and arch pain
  • Achilles and other tendon problems
  • Shin pain, including shin splints
  • Pain in the ball of the foot or toes
  • Overuse injuries from running or walking

Our approach

We assess the injured area, how you move and what your sport or activity asks of your body. From there we build a rehabilitation plan that may include managing your training load, strengthening exercises, strapping, footwear changes, orthotics, mobilisation or dry needling.

Getting back to activity

You'll get clear steps for returning to activity, with milestones you can track. The aim is to get you moving again and lower the chance of the injury coming back.

Why injuries happen

  • A sudden jump in training, such as running further or more often than usual
  • Worn-out shoes, or shoes that don't suit your activity
  • A change in surface, such as moving from grass to concrete
  • A previous injury that didn't fully recover
  • Weakness or stiffness in the feet, ankles or calves

Ankle sprains

Most ankle sprains recover well with a gradual return to activity rather than long rest. Balance and strengthening exercises are an important part of recovery and lower the risk of spraining the same ankle again. We'll show you which exercises to do and how to progress them.

Get an X-ray first if you can't walk four steps after an injury, or if there's tenderness directly over the ankle or foot bones. These can be signs of a fracture.

Funding

Sports injury treatment is available to private patients. If you hold a DVA card, ask us whether your treatment can be covered.

Common questions

Ask us anything else on 0493 367 109.

Should I rest a sports injury completely?

Usually not for long. Complete rest can weaken the injured area. Most injuries respond better to the right amount of activity, adjusted as you recover. We'll tell you what's safe for you.

Do I need a referral?

Private patients don't need a referral. DVA patients need a D904 referral from their GP.

Can you help with running shoes?

Yes. We can look at your current shoes and how you run, and suggest what to look for in your next pair.

When can I get back to sport?

When you can do the key movements of your sport without your pain getting worse, and your strength has returned. We'll set clear milestones so you know when you're ready.
