What general podiatry covers

  • Trimming and filing toenails, including thick or hard-to-cut nails
  • Care for ingrown and curved toenails
  • Removing corns and reducing callus
  • Treating dry skin and cracked heels
  • Checking your feet for early signs of problems

Why regular foot care matters

As we get older, nails often become thicker and harder to cut, and bending down or seeing your feet clearly gets harder. Overgrown nails, corns and callus can make walking painful, change how you balance and lead to skin breakdown. Regular care keeps you comfortable on your feet and helps you stay active and independent.

What happens at your home visit

  1. We ask about your health, medications and any foot concerns.
  2. We check your skin, nails, circulation and sensation.
  3. We treat your nails, corns and callus using sterilised instruments.
  4. We give you simple advice on footwear and skin care, and suggest when to book next.

Signs it's time to see a podiatrist

  • Your nails are too thick or hard to cut, or they're curling into the skin
  • Corns or callus hurt when you walk
  • Your heels are cracked deeply enough to split or bleed
  • You can't easily reach or see your feet
  • Your nails have changed colour, thickness or shape

Ingrown toenails

Many ingrown nails settle with careful trimming of the nail edge and advice on cutting and footwear. If an ingrown nail keeps coming back, a minor procedure to remove part of the nail edge may be recommended. We'll explain your options and arrange a referral if needed.

Caring for your feet between visits

  • Wash your feet daily and dry them well, especially between the toes
  • Moisturise dry heels, but not between the toes
  • Cut nails straight across and not too short, or leave thick or hard-to-reach nails to us
  • Don't cut corns yourself or use medicated corn pads. They contain acid that can damage healthy skin, which is especially risky if you have diabetes or poor circulation
  • Wear shoes that fit well and don't press on your toes

Common questions

Ask us anything else on 0493 367 109.

How often should I see a podiatrist for nail care?

Most people book every 6 to 10 weeks, depending on how quickly their nails grow and whether corns or callus build up. We'll suggest a schedule that suits you.

Does it hurt?

Routine nail, corn and callus care shouldn't be painful. Tell us if anything feels uncomfortable and we'll adjust.

Can you help with thick or fungal nails?

Yes. We reduce and file thickened nails so they're comfortable and easier to manage, and talk you through treatment options for fungal nails.

What should I have ready for the visit?

A comfortable chair near good light, your DVA card if you have one, a list of your current medications and the shoes you wear most often.

Is general podiatry covered by DVA?

Yes. Nail, corn and callus care is covered for Gold Card holders with a D904 referral from their GP.
