How it works

Your feet are dipped in, or wrapped with, warm melted paraffin wax several times to build up a coating. The feet are then wrapped to hold in the warmth for 10 to 20 minutes before the wax is peeled away. The gentle, even heat relaxes muscles and joints, and the wax helps the skin hold moisture.

Who may benefit

  • People with stiff or achy joints from arthritis
  • Very dry, rough or cracked skin
  • Feet that feel cold and tight
  • Anyone who'd like a relaxing addition to routine foot care

What a session involves

  1. We check the feeling and circulation in your feet, and look for any broken skin.
  2. We check the wax temperature and test it on your skin first.
  3. Your feet are coated in wax, wrapped and left to rest for 10 to 20 minutes.
  4. The wax is peeled away and the skin is moisturised.

What to expect

Paraffin wax eases stiffness and dryness for a while rather than fixing the cause. It works best alongside regular foot care, exercises to keep joints moving and daily moisturising. Many people find it most helpful before stretching, when joints are warm and move more easily.

Who shouldn't have paraffin wax. It isn't suitable if you have reduced feeling in your feet (common with diabetes), poor circulation, open wounds, skin infections or rashes. We check your circulation and sensation before every treatment to make sure it's safe for you.

Funding

Paraffin wax treatment is available to private patients. If you hold a DVA card, ask us whether it can be included in your treatment.

Common questions

Ask us anything else on 0493 367 109.

Is the wax hot?

It's warm, not hot. We check the temperature before every treatment and test it on your skin first.

How often can I have it?

Many people add it to their regular nail and skin care appointments. We'll suggest what suits your skin and joints.

Can I have paraffin wax if I have diabetes?

Only if your feet have normal feeling and good circulation. Diabetes can reduce sensation, so we always test your feet first and won't use wax if there's any risk of a burn.

Can paraffin wax help arthritis?

It can ease stiffness and discomfort in arthritic joints for a while, but it doesn't change the arthritis itself. It works best alongside exercises to keep joints moving.
