What is foot mobilisation therapy?
Foot mobilisation therapy (FMT) is a hands-on technique where the podiatrist gently moves the joints of the foot and ankle through their range of motion. It aims to restore movement in joints that have become stiff, which can ease pain and improve how the foot works.
Who it may help
- Stiff feet and ankles, including from arthritis
- Heel and arch pain
- Pain in the ball of the foot
- Stiffness after an ankle sprain or injury
- Balance problems linked to stiff ankles
What to expect
Treatment is gentle and done while you sit or lie comfortably. You may hear or feel a click as a joint moves, which is normal. Most people feel looser afterwards, and some have mild soreness for a day. FMT is usually combined with exercises and other treatment as part of a wider plan.
What a session involves
- We check how each joint in your foot and ankle moves, and where it's stiff or painful.
- We gently mobilise the stiff joints, checking your comfort as we go.
- We recheck your movement so you can feel the difference.
- We show you simple exercises to keep the joints moving between visits.
Making the results last
Mobilisation works best when it's backed up by home exercises and supportive footwear. Joints that have been stiff for a long time tend to tighten up again without regular movement, so the exercises are an important part of treatment.
Funding
Foot mobilisation therapy is available to private patients. If you hold a DVA card, ask us whether it can be included in your treatment.
