Your Gold Card and podiatry
If you receive the War Widow's or Widower's Pension, you're eligible for the Veteran Gold Card, which DVA now calls the Veteran Card – All Conditions. It's issued to you in your own right, and it applies to clinically needed treatment for all medical conditions, including podiatry.
A Gold Card isn't transferred when the card holder dies, so you'll need your own card rather than your late partner's. If you haven't received one, call DVA on 1800 VETERAN (1800 838 372).
Why home visits help
Many war widows live on their own, and some no longer drive. Getting to a clinic can mean relying on family, arranging transport and waiting around, which is a lot of effort for a foot appointment. We come to you with everything needed for treatment and see you in your own chair. A family member or friend is welcome to be there.
Common foot problems we help with
- Thick or curved toenails
- Corns, callus and cracked heels
- Diabetes, circulation and nerve checks
- Sore feet, heels and ankles
- Shoes and slippers that rub or slip
- Slow-healing sores
Toenails often get harder to cut safely with stiff hands or poorer eyesight, and worn shoes or backless slippers increase the risk of a fall. These are some of the most common reasons people start seeing a podiatrist at home.
How to get started
- Check your card. You'll need your own current Veteran Gold Card.
- Ask your GP for a referral. At your next appointment, ask for a "D904 referral to podiatry". Read our D904 referral guide.
- Call us on 0493 367 109. We'll arrange a time to visit you at home.
For family and friends
If you're helping your mother, grandmother or a friend, you're welcome to call us on their behalf and to be there for the visit. Signs she may need a podiatrist include long or thickened nails, sore feet, shoes that no longer fit, or being less steady on her feet.
Support for war widows
